Hamburger Stroganoff

My vacation from posting is over... I am going to start posting those everyday dinners more frequently once again.

Sometimes people ask me why I do these postings. They say some of the stuff I make is pretty cool, but most of it is just normal food. I mean, who posts about just normal food? I do, because my goal isn't to create food porn or shove in your face how good a cook I am. No, my goal is to help give normal people, like me, ideas on what to feed their families. My goal is to keep pounding on you with simple delicious meals that you can actually make... until finally you just give up and start making them.

Why do I do this? Because, I know you can do it! I know, even those of you who swear you cannot cook, or even boil water, you can do it.. and if you do, you will quickly find out that very simple meals can blow the doors off those packaged things you may be used to.

On top of that, I try to use the most basic ingredients. I try not to go into elaborate or hard to find ingredients, and I do not just fall back on noodles with this or that sauce. I do that because I want to show you meals that you, most likely, have almost everything you need to make. I want to show you food that you can enjoy with your family, and cook up in a short amount of time.

I don't want to make meals that you need to plan for weeks ahead.. or meals you need to make special trips to get everything you need. I want to make meals that you can make tomorrow, or even tonight, if you really felt like it. So... to that end.. here is the next in my collection of culinary mediocrities...


Ingredients: (serves 2 very hungry people or 4 kinda hungry people.. actual servings is 4)
1 lb ground beef (I prefer 90/10 for this, but 80/20 is fine)
Salt & Pepper (not the musicians.. well ok if you have them you can use them)
2 Tbs Olive Oil (insert popeye reference as applicable)
1 Medium onion (quartered then sliced thin)
8 Ounces of mushroom (cleaned and halved)
2 cloves garlic (Diced)
1 1/2 cups beef broth
1/4 cup flour
1 cup sour cream

and some egg noodles

To begin, I take a large skillet and heat it over medium heat. I add in my 2 Tbs of olive oil, then my hamburger and add a generous amount of salt and pepper.

I cook the hamburger until it is fully browned... then remove it to a plate to sit for a few.. leaving all my drippings in the pan.

I toss in my onions, garlic and mushrooms and cook them over medium heat until everything is tender. (Alternately you can raise the heat and brown the onions and mushrooms and add in the garlic toward the end)

Once everything is nice and tender.. I return my meat to the pan.. then add in 1 cup of beef broth.

Then, I take the other 1/2 cup of broth, along with my 1/4 cup of flour and combine them in a bowl. I mix them until fully combined and there are no lumps. I add that mixture to my skillet and mix it all up until all the broth in the skillet is one color.

I cook over medium until it comes to a boil, then I lower the heat to simmer and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.

At this point I give my concoction a little taste. Does it need more salt? more pepper? If so, I give it what it needs.

Then, I just stir in 1 cup of sour cream:

I stir everything over low heat until it is fully combined.

I put egg noodles on the plate, then scoop some of this yummy goodness on top, and dinner is served!
